In light of escalating military tension with China, Taiwan’s representative to the United States, Alexander Yui, has underscored the necessity of continuous U.S. arms sales to bolster Taiwan’s defense capabilities. Yui highlighted Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to increase its defense budget and its commitment to enhancing its ability to manage potential security threats, stressing that the island must not solely depend on external support but should also focus on its own defense readiness.

A considerable U.S. weapons package valued at approximately $14 billion for Taiwan is currently being reviewed by the U.S. administration. This proposed arms deal has garnered backing from lawmakers in Washington who perceive a growing urgency in addressing Taiwan’s defense requirements, given the intensifying military maneuvers by China in the vicinity of the island. Yui pointed out the necessity for military support to be proportionate to the threats posed, mentioning China’s frequent military exercises, deployment of warships, and aircraft activities near Taiwan.

Yui reaffirmed that Taiwan’s aim is to secure its safety and uphold its democratic system through defensive strategies. He emphasized that the continued support of the United States is crucial for Taiwan’s security. U.S. officials have assured that the policy regarding Taiwan remains consistent and highlighted that aiding Taiwan’s security is a significant component of their bilateral relations.

Despite the ongoing regional tensions, Taiwan maintains confidence in its enduring partnership with the United States. The collaboration between the two nations is seen as vital in ensuring stability and security in the region, and both parties are committed to preserving this strategic alliance amidst the challenges posed by China’s growing military presence.
